About Us
Our inspiration for Murabiyoon Sports occurred whilst spectating on a football tournament on a cold and windy spring morning.
The participants, teenage secondary school girls were intensely engrossed in each game. They were from a range of backgrounds and ethnicities. Some of them had chosen to wear hijabs or modest clothing. What struck us was how they were all enjoying the competition in a carefree and relaxed manner, without any signs of self-consciousness and nervousness. There were no signs that any of the girls felt they did not belong on that football pitch.
This was the lightbulb moment for us. We asked ourselves that wouldn’t it be amazing if this sense of belonging could be re-created for all young people, particularly those who are marginalised or find access to sports difficult.
We set about developing relationships with major sports governing bodies alongside the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) so that all young people have opportunities for equality of unrestricted access to a wide range of sports.
